Gorgeous vintage 'flapper' beaded drawstring evening handbag, made in Belgium by F.H. & Co. The exterior is composed of tightly sewn-on black delica and seed beads, with a flowered pattern created with red, green, and yellow seed beads. The 3/4" wide strap is made from black seed beads, with a border of delica beads. The interior of the bag has a grosgrain weave cloth lining, in dove gray, with a small mirror pocket, complete with a small round mirror backed by the same dove gray grosgrain fabric. The bag measures 8" from top (excluding strap) to bottom tip, and 7" wide. The strap drop is approximately 6".
The exterior of the bag is in excellent condition: if there are any beads missing, it is not noticeable. Likewise, the bead-ended drawstring works well and is not frayed. The interior of the bag shows some wear, as may be seen in the photos, mostly near the top of the interior.
The bag is labeled "MADE IN BELGIUM by F.H. & Co." I have not yet been able to find anything about this company, save that they made gorgeously beaded bags, if the examples I've run across are any indication. The style of the bag, the lining, and and other similar bags which I have been able to trace to the 1930s lead me to believe that this bag dates from the same decade. (Since 1930, the U.S. marking statute, 19 U.S.C. 1304 (the Tariff Act of 1930), generally requires that all articles of foreign origin imported into the U.S. be marked with the country of origin.)
